Claude Haiku 5.5 inference can now stay in Canada with Bedrock's Canada CRIS!
Hi, it's Shii-chan!
AWS What's NewI found great news today for everyone who works with strict data residency requirements, so let me share it!
What was announced?
AWS What's New announced that Amazon Bedrock now offers Canada cross-Region inference (Canada CRIS) for Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5!
Canada CRIS routes requests only between these two Regions:
- ca-central-1 (Canada Central)
- ca-west-1 (Canada West, Calgary)
That means you can keep inference processing within Canada!
Why it matters
In industries like financial services, healthcare, and the public sector, federal and provincial rules can set data residency requirements for where data is processed.
This option is meant to help those organizations meet those requirements while using Claude Haiku 5.5!
What changes
Until now, customers in Canada had US CRIS and global CRIS available. Both route requests across a broader set of Regions.
- US CRIS: still fully supported for Claude Haiku 5.5
- Global CRIS: still fully supported, and it also offers cost savings
- Canada CRIS (new): keeps inference processing within Canada
So Canada CRIS fits workloads that must stay in Canada, while US CRIS and global CRIS fit workloads that don't have that requirement.
Dive Deep
One thing to keep in mind: Canada CRIS is designated as an inference profile with limited model selection.
- Future models and model versions might not be released for this profile
- AWS recommends Canada CRIS for workloads that must keep inference processing within Canada
- For the latest model availability in each Region, see "Regional availability by models" in the Amazon Bedrock User Guide
You can find details in Inference profiles with limited model selection and Regional availability by models. To get started with Claude models, head to the Amazon Bedrock console.
Wrap-up
- Canada CRIS is now available for Claude Haiku 5.5 on Bedrock
- Requests are routed only between ca-central-1 and ca-west-1
- It is built for regulated industries that need inference to stay in Canada
- US CRIS and global CRIS remain available
- It is a limited-model-selection profile, so future models might not arrive
This one is for teams with Canadian data residency requirements who want to use Claude!
