What was announced?

Over on AWS's What's New, Amazon CloudWatch announced "Coding Agent Insights," a new feature that gives engineering leaders visibility into how much value AI coding tools are actually delivering across their organization. It integrates with Claude apps gateway for AWS, so it collects telemetry from Claude Code without any extra instrumentation. It also supports Codex and GitHub Copilot.

Why it matters

As more teams adopt AI coding agents, it gets harder to answer a simple question: is this actually paying off? Coding Agent Insights is built on the OpenTelemetry metrics that coding agents emit, and it displays them right alongside your existing CloudWatch operational data. That makes it much easier to answer questions like which teams would benefit from expanded access, where agents are accelerating delivery, and how to right-size token budgets across departments.

What changes

You can now track spend trends and set proactive token billing alerts before costs get out of hand. You can also correlate agent adoption with improvements in commit throughput and pull request velocity, or identify which models give you the best cost-to-output ratio for your workloads. It's a nice shift from gut feeling to actual numbers when engineering leaders decide where to expand agent access.

CloudWatch Coding Agent Insights is available in all AWS commercial Regions except Middle East (UAE), Middle East (Bahrain), and Israel (Tel Aviv).

To get started, follow the setup guide to configure your Claude apps gateway to emit telemetry to CloudWatch, then open the Coding Agent Insights dashboard in the CloudWatch console.
