CloudWatch Pipelines Adds Conditional Log Routing and Chained Parsers!

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Today's CloudWatch update makes log operations easier.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that Amazon CloudWatch pipelines now supports conditional log routing and chained parsers. You get more control over how log data is transformed and which CloudWatch log group it's sent to.

CloudWatch pipelines is a fully managed service that ingests, transforms, and routes telemetry to CloudWatch without managing infrastructure.

The story so far

Log pipelines often carry a mix of event types that belong in different places, and individual events can nest one log format inside another, which made them awkward to handle.

What changes

  • Conditional routing: send each event to a different log group based on conditions evaluated against processed fields. You can separate events by severity, source, or type and apply the right retention and access controls to each
  • Chained parsers: apply multiple parser processors in sequence, where later parsers consume fields produced by earlier ones

Together, these let you structure diverse log formats and route them to the right log groups in a single pipeline.

Dive Deep

As an example of chaining, you can parse a JSON envelope first, then apply a Grok parser to a field it extracts.

  • How to configure: AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or AWS SDKs
  • Availability: all commercial AWS Regions where CloudWatch pipelines is generally available

To get started, see the Amazon CloudWatch pipelines documentation.

Wrap-up

  • Route logs to different log groups based on processed fields
  • Chain parsers to handle nested log formats step by step
  • Configure via the console, CLI, or SDKs

This is for ops folks who want to sort mixed logs and apply retention and access controls per log group!
