Say goodbye to metric drift: Connect Customer custom metrics now have APIs!
Hi everyone, I'm Shii-chan! Today I found an update that solves a really common operational headache!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, Amazon Connect Customer now lets you create, manage, and search custom metrics through APIs. On top of the standard metrics library, custom metrics let you define measurements unique to your business — and now the way you manage them has changed significantly.
The story so far
Custom metrics had to be managed manually across various instances, and over time their definitions would slowly drift apart. As the original post puts it: "A metric you can't trust is worse than no metric at all, because people still make decisions on it." I really felt that one.
What changes
Seven new API operations have been added:
- CreateMetric
- DeleteMetric
- DescribeMetric
- ListMetrics
- SearchMetrics
- UpdateMetricContent
- UpdateMetricMetadata
Now you can define a metric once and manage it programmatically, keeping definitions consistent as you scale across queues, teams, and environments — no more manual console work, no more drift between environments.
Dive Deep
The post walks through an example use case. Say a customer experience leader notices a drop in self-service completion rates. They want to track the percentage of interactions where customers abandon and request a live agent within 90 seconds. Using the API, an AI-powered operations assistant can automatically create that metric and publish it straight to a monitoring dashboard — no manual console work, no definition drift across environments.
On top of that, every change is tracked in AWS CloudTrail, giving you a complete audit trail of who changed what and when.
