Hey everyone, it's Shii-chan! I've got a nice update for anyone running Amazon DocumentDB, so let's dive right in!

What was announced?

This comes from AWS What's New. Amazon DocumentDB (with MongoDB compatibility) now supports direct major version upgrades (MVU) from engine versions 3.6 and 4.0 straight to version 8.0. Your existing data, configuration, and cluster settings are preserved through the upgrade!

The story so far

Previously, moving from an older version up to a version as recent as 8.0 meant stepping through the intermediate versions one at a time. Each hop meant extra validation and downtime planning, which made the whole process a real chore for ops teams.

What changes

With this update, you can take a 3.6 or 4.0 cluster straight to 8.0 in one move. No more intermediate stops, which makes upgrade planning a lot simpler. And once you're on 8.0, you immediately get access to the latest security patches, performance improvements, and new developer capabilities.
