AWS Lambda Durable Functions Land in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud!

Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Here's news for anyone building multi-step serverless workflows!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

This is from AWS What's New. AWS Lambda durable functions are now available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud region.

The story so far

Durable functions themselves already existed in other regions as a way to build multi-step applications and AI workflows within the Lambda developer experience. But in environments like the European Sovereign Cloud, with its strict compliance and data sovereignty requirements, this feature wasn't available until now. This rollout lets you use durable functions while still meeting those requirements.

What changes

Durable functions add new primitives, like "step" and "wait," to your event handler.

  • Checkpoint your progress along the way
  • Automatically recover from failures
  • Pay no compute charges while an on-demand function execution is paused

That means you can build complex processes, like order workflows, user onboarding, and AI-assisted tasks, on the European Sovereign Cloud while meeting compliance and security requirements.

Dive Deep

You can activate durable functions for new Lambda functions based on Python (3.13 and 3.14), Node.js (22 and 24), or Java (17+). Activation works through the AWS Lambda API, the AWS Management Console, or the AWS SDK, and also through infrastructure-as-code tools like AWS CloudFormation, AWS SAM, and the AWS CDK.

Wrap-up

  • AWS Lambda durable functions are now available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud
  • "step" and "wait" let you checkpoint progress, recover from failures, and pause without compute charges
  • Available for new Python 3.13/3.14, Node.js 22/24, and Java 17+ Lambda functions
  • Activate via console, API, or SDK, plus CloudFormation, SAM, or CDK
  • Great news if you need to build multi-step or AI workflows under strict compliance requirements!
