Lambda durable functions come to AWS GovCloud (US)

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Lambda durable functions have arrived in GovCloud!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

In AWS What's New, AWS announced that AWS Lambda durable functions are now available in both the AWS GovCloud (US-West) and GovCloud (US-East) Regions.

Why it matters

Durable functions let developers build reliable multi-step applications and AI workflows within the Lambda developer experience. With GovCloud availability, government customers and regulated industries can use them while meeting stringent compliance and security requirements.

What changes

You can now orchestrate complex processes such as order workflows, user onboarding, and AI-assisted tasks in GovCloud!

Dive Deep

Durable functions extend the Lambda programming model with new primitives in your event handler, such as "step" and "wait". They let you:

  • Checkpoint progress
  • Automatically recover from failures
  • Pause executions without incurring compute charges for on-demand functions

You can activate durable functions for new functions using these runtimes, per the announcement:

  • Python 3.13 and 3.14
  • Node.js 22 and 24
  • Go 1.24 or later
  • .NET (version 2.2)
  • Java 17+

You can enable it through the Lambda API, the AWS Management Console, or the AWS SDK, as well as infrastructure as code tools such as AWS CloudFormation, AWS SAM, and the AWS CDK. For pricing and Region availability, see the AWS Lambda pricing page and the AWS Capabilities by Region page.

Wrap-up

  • Lambda durable functions are available in GovCloud (US-West / US-East)
  • step and wait give you checkpoints, automatic recovery, and pausing without compute charges
  • Enable them on new Python, Node.js, Go, .NET, and Java functions

This is for anyone building long workflows or AI processing on Lambda in regulated environments!
