EC2 Capacity Manager adds supportability checks and fulfillment metrics
Hi, it's Shiichan! Here's a capacity management update for everyone running EC2 at scale.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS What's New says Amazon EC2 Capacity Manager gains two capabilities:
- Real-time supportability checks
- Capacity fulfillment metrics
Why it matters
Global enterprises that run thousands of workloads across hundreds of accounts often spread each request across multiple instance types and Availability Zones to give EC2 more options to fulfill it.
But it was hard to see which combinations are actually likely to get capacity, and whether those choices were working.
What changes
- Supportability checks: score how well each instance type and Availability Zone can support a request, without launching or reserving instances. The check returns a High, Medium or Low score for each option, plus an overall score
- Fulfillment metrics: show how much capacity was delivered against the amount requested. You can measure fulfillment rates across your AWS organization, accounts, Regions and tagged workloads, with a breakdown by instance type and Availability Zone
Use the checks to get a read up front, and the metrics to look back at how your choices performed.
Dive Deep
Availability:
- Both capabilities are included with AWS Unified Operations, the AWS Support plan for global enterprises running mission-critical workloads
- They are available in all commercial AWS Regions
For more, see "Plan and measure EC2 flexibility with Amazon EC2 Capacity Manager" on the AWS Compute Blog and the Amazon EC2 Capacity Manager user guide.
Wrap-up
- Check how likely each instance type and Availability Zone is to get capacity, as High, Medium or Low, without launching or reserving
- Measure fulfillment rates by organization, account, Region and tag
- Included with AWS Unified Operations and available in all commercial Regions
This is for infrastructure teams who run EC2 at scale and struggle with capacity shortages!
