Elastic Beanstalk gets a new deployment mode: Cluster Mode lets you run multiple apps together!

Hi there, it's me! Today I found news about a new deployment mode for AWS Elastic Beanstalk, so let me share it with you. It might sound like a quiet update, but it should really pay off for anyone running lots of apps on Elastic Beanstalk!

What was announced?

Over on AWS What's New, AWS announced a new deployment mode for Elastic Beanstalk called Cluster Mode. It lets you run and manage multiple applications together on shared infrastructure within the same account.

The usage is simple: you provide your source code, a Dockerfile, or a container image from Amazon ECR, and Elastic Beanstalk handles containerization, provisioning, and ongoing operations for you. There's also a new Elastic Beanstalk GitHub Action, so you can deploy straight from your repository.

The story so far

Until now, Elastic Beanstalk (now referred to as "Standard Mode") worked by giving each application its own dedicated environment, meaning a full set of dedicated infrastructure. As the number of applications grew, so did the amount of dedicated infrastructure needed for each one.

What changes

With Cluster Mode, instead of a dedicated environment per application, multiple applications run together on pooled infrastructure powered by Amazon EKS. You no longer need to stand up a new environment for every application, which can lower your per-application compute cost. Standard Mode remains available as before, for the existing one-to-one application-to-environment experience.

Dive Deep

Here's what Cluster Mode supports:

  • Event-driven autoscaling
  • OpenTelemetry-based observability, sent to both Amazon CloudWatch and third-party observability providers
  • AWS Secrets Manager integration
  • HTTPS enabled by default through AWS Certificate Manager

You can deploy via the console, CLI, or APIs, plus the new Elastic Beanstalk GitHub Action. You simply select Cluster Mode when creating an environment in the console to use it.

Cluster Mode is available in every commercial AWS Region where Elastic Beanstalk operates. There's no additional charge for Cluster Mode itself; you only pay for the underlying AWS resources it uses, such as the EKS cluster and EKS Auto Mode. On the compliance side, it's HIPAA eligible and supports PCI DSS, SOC, FedRAMP, and IRAP.

Wrap-up

  • Elastic Beanstalk now has a new deployment mode called Cluster Mode
  • You can deploy from source code, a Dockerfile, or an ECR image onto shared Amazon EKS-based infrastructure
  • No more dedicated environment per app, which can lower per-application compute cost
  • Supports event-driven autoscaling, OpenTelemetry-based observability, Secrets Manager integration, and HTTPS by default via ACM
  • The existing Standard Mode (one app per environment) is still available, and you can now deploy directly via a new GitHub Action too

This update is a great fit for anyone running lots of smaller applications on Elastic Beanstalk who wants to manage infrastructure together more cost-efficiently!
