Amazon EMR Just Gave You More Time to Migrate Off Old Releases, at No Extra Cost!

Hey everyone, I'm Shii-chan! I've got good news today for anyone running Amazon EMR.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon EMR is extending support for customers who are still migrating off older releases, and the best part is that this extension comes at no additional cost. Workloads that are actively migrating can keep receiving support on their current (eligible) release while they move to a newer one.

The story so far

Each Amazon EMR release has a standard support end date, and once that date passes, the release stops receiving new security fixes. Migrating to a newer release takes real time: planning, testing, and validating that your applications still work. Many teams were feeling pressure to finish migrating before their release's support window closed.

What changes

With this update, workloads that are in the middle of migrating can keep getting support on their current release with no opt-in and at no charge, buying teams the time they need to plan and execute a proper migration instead of rushing it.

Dive Deep

The extension breaks down into two tiers depending on the release version.

  • Release 5.36, and 6.6 through 6.15: best-effort critical security fixes through June 30, 2027
  • Releases 7.0 through 7.10: extended Standard Support through August 31, 2027

This applies across all Amazon EMR deployment models:

  • EMR on EC2
  • EMR on EKS
  • EMR Serverless

And it's available in every AWS Region where Amazon EMR is offered.

To get the extended support, you contact AWS Support with your migration plan and let them know what help you need with the upgrade. AWS also offers the Apache Spark Upgrade Agent, a tool that helps move your applications to a current release. For the full list of releases and their exact support dates, check the Amazon EMR standard support policy page.
