Surprise: G6 Instances Now Power SageMaker AI Inference in GovCloud Too!
Hey, it's Shiichan! I found an AWS region-expansion announcement today, and I honestly didn't expect it to reach GovCloud — that was a nice surprise!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS What's New announced that Amazon EC2 G6 instances are now available for Amazon SageMaker AI inference in the AWS GovCloud (US-East) region.
The story so far
G6 instances were already available for SageMaker AI inference in other regions. But they hadn't yet reached GovCloud, the region used by government agencies and organizations with strict compliance and data residency requirements.
What changes
With this region expansion, government agencies and organizations operating in GovCloud can now deploy inference endpoints on G6 instances. The expected use cases include:
- Small-to-medium language models
- Image generation
- Computer vision
The nice part is being able to run these generative AI workloads while still meeting compliance and data residency requirements.
Dive Deep
Here's what G6 instances offer:
- Up to 8 NVIDIA L4 Tensor Core GPUs, each with 24 GB of memory
- Third-generation AMD EPYC processors
- Up to 2x the deep learning inference performance compared to G4dn instances
G6's strength is strong price-performance for production inference workloads that fit within 24 GB of GPU memory. For pricing details, AWS points to its pricing page. With this expansion, G6 instances remain available in previously supported regions in addition to GovCloud (US-East).
Wrap-up
- Amazon EC2 G6 instances are now available for Amazon SageMaker AI inference in AWS GovCloud (US-East)
- Up to 8 NVIDIA L4 GPUs (24 GB each) plus third-gen AMD EPYC deliver up to 2x the inference performance of G4dn
- Suited for small-to-medium LLMs, image generation, and computer vision workloads
- Government-focused environments with strict compliance and data residency needs now have a strong price-performance inference option
For engineers building systems for government agencies, this adds a genuinely practical new option.
