AWS Glue's Zero-ETL Gets Ownership Checks — Say Goodbye to Table Conflicts!
Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today I found some quietly satisfying news for anyone working with data pipelines.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS's What's New page announced a new feature for AWS Glue's zero-ETL integrations. Zero-ETL lets you sync data from a source into a target catalog automatically, without writing code — and now, the target table properties it creates come with a concept of "ownership." When you configure a source table and a target catalog, the resulting table properties get associated with the integration that created them. This applies to both Amazon S3 Tables and SageMaker Lakehouse catalogs.
The story so far
Until now, there was no way to detect when multiple zero-ETL integrations pointed at the same target table. If you accidentally configured a different integration against the same table, your data could get overwritten unexpectedly, or land somewhere you didn't intend. Any team running several zero-ETL integrations in parallel was exposed to this "silent conflict" risk.
What changes
Now, if you try to create or modify an integration whose table properties are already owned by another integration, Glue identifies the owning integration and guides you to either choose a different target or update the existing integration instead. That makes it much easier to guarantee, structurally, that your data lands exactly where you intend, in the shape you intend. It's a quiet but genuinely useful safety net for any team juggling multiple zero-ETL integrations.
Dive Deep
This is available in all AWS Commercial Regions and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions where AWS Glue zero-ETL integrations are supported. No extra charges or complicated setup were mentioned — you can get started directly from the AWS Glue Developer Guide and the AWS Glue console.
Wrap-up
- AWS Glue's zero-ETL integrations now track target table property ownership and detect conflicts
- If a new or modified integration would conflict with a table another integration owns, Glue tells you and guides you to a different target or an update instead
- Supported catalogs are Amazon S3 Tables and SageMaker Lakehouse; it's available everywhere zero-ETL integrations are supported, across AWS Commercial and GovCloud (US) Regions
- Especially useful if your team runs multiple zero-ETL integrations!
