What was announced?

This one comes from AWS What's New. Two new models, Claude Opus 4.8 and Claude Sonnet 5, are now available in the Kiro IDE and CLI for the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. On top of that, Kiro enterprise administrators now get new built-in monitoring and tracking tools for organizational usage.

The story so far

Until now, Kiro users in the GovCloud (US) Regions didn't have access to the latest Claude models right away. Since GovCloud is a secure region built for government workloads, model rollouts there typically follow a different timeline than commercial regions. This update finally closes that gap.

What changes

GovCloud (US) users at government agencies and related organizations can now use Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 5 directly in Kiro. And administrators finally get real visibility into how their organization is using Kiro — who's using which model, and how much. That should make license optimization and auditing a lot easier!

Here's what makes each new model stand out:

  • Claude Opus 4.8: the most intelligent Opus model, with stronger self-verification, more efficient tool calling, and better follow-through on long-horizon projects. It plans before it edits, catches its own mistakes, and finds creative paths around obstacles instead of stalling. Supports a 1M context window, with a 2.2x credit multiplier
  • Claude Sonnet 5: the most agentic Sonnet model, bringing stronger reasoning, tool use, and coding at Sonnet-class pricing. It approaches Opus 4.8 on reasoning and agentic coding benchmarks while running at meaningfully lower cost, giving developers a cost-performance dial between maximum accuracy and higher throughput. Available with experimental support, a 1M context window, and a 1.3x credit multiplier

The new monitoring capabilities come in three parts:

  • Usage dashboard: aggregate metrics for the whole organization, at a glance
  • Per-user activity reports: daily CSV telemetry covering credits, model usage, and more, delivered to your own S3 bucket for license optimization and audits
  • Optional prompt logging: captures user prompts and Kiro's responses for compliance and debugging

All of this data stays in your own AWS account, with no additional charge beyond S3 storage. Just make sure your IDE or CLI is updated to the latest version to use it.
