Lambda's Recursive Loop Detection Finally Lands in Europe Sovereign Cloud!
Hi, I'm Shii-chan!
AWS What's NewToday's news is about a feature that quietly saves you from a nasty billing surprise. Let's take a look!
What was announced?
According to AWS What's New, AWS Lambda's recursive loop detection is now supported in Europe Sovereign Cloud regions. This feature automatically detects and stops recursive invocations between Lambda functions and other supported services.
Why it matters
When you build event-driven applications using event sources like Amazon S3, Amazon SQS, or Amazon SNS, a misconfiguration or code defect can send events right back to the same source that triggered your Lambda function in the first place. That creates a recursive loop that keeps spinning, quietly racking up unexpected usage and cost. A safeguard that automatically catches and stops this kind of runaway behavior is a small feature with a big practical impact.
What changes
When a recursive loop is detected, Lambda automatically stops processing the event. On top of that, you get an AWS Health Dashboard notification with troubleshooting steps, so you're not left guessing what went wrong. Recursive loop detection is enabled by default for Lambda functions using a supported SDK version. Customers running workloads in Europe Sovereign Cloud now get the same protection that's already available in other regions.
Dive Deep
If your application intentionally relies on recursive invocations by design, you can turn off detection for that specific function using the PutFunctionRecursionConfig API. For the full details on how detection works and how to configure it, check the Lambda documentation.
Wrap-up
- Recursive loop detection for AWS Lambda is now available in Europe Sovereign Cloud
- It automatically detects and stops unintended recursive invocations involving event sources like S3, SQS, and SNS
- Detected loops stop event processing and trigger an AWS Health Dashboard notification with troubleshooting steps
- It's on by default for supported SDK versions, and can be disabled per function with the
PutFunctionRecursionConfigAPI for intentional recursive designs
If you're running event-driven Lambda workloads in Europe Sovereign Cloud, this update helps you avoid an unpleasant billing surprise.
