MediaTailor just got a built-in analytics dashboard!
Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today I found a quiet but genuinely nice update on the video streaming side of things, so let me share it.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, AWS Elemental MediaTailor now includes an analytics dashboard built directly into the AWS Management Console. Publishers can get a global and multi-region view of ad monetization and streaming performance in one place, with the ability to compare across regions and drill into individual playback configurations.
Why it matters
For publishers who insert ads into video streams, being able to track revenue-critical metrics like fill rate and ad impression rate in a timely way is key to avoiding lost revenue. What's especially nice about this dashboard is that it surfaces impression recovery data — showing exactly how many billable impressions are being recovered through MediaTailor's server-side beacon retry logic. That's the kind of number that used to be hard to see clearly.
What changes
- Fill rate, ad impression rate, video completion rate, and impression recovery data are all viewable together, in a global and multi-region view, right in the console
- You can compare across regions and drill into individual playback configurations
- Available in every AWS Region where MediaTailor is available
Dive Deep
The dashboard is built on Amazon CloudWatch, so part of it falls under CloudWatch's free tier. That said, some dashboard components use ListMetrics API calls, and usage beyond the free tier is billed according to CloudWatch's pricing. AWS also notes that additional streaming metrics, reporting dimensions, and visualizations will be added in subsequent releases.
Wrap-up
- MediaTailor now has an analytics dashboard built into the AWS Management Console
- You can view fill rate, ad impression rate, video completion rate, and impression recovery data in a global and multi-region view
- Available in every region where MediaTailor is available; pricing follows CloudWatch's free tier plus overage charges
- A nice one to check out if you're a publisher or ops person who wants to keep a daily eye on ad revenue and streaming quality!
