What was announced?

Over on AWS What's New, AWS announced that OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna are now generally available on Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud (US-West) and AWS GovCloud (US-East). GovCloud is a special AWS region built for government agencies and heavily regulated industries, and these models run on Bedrock's next-generation inference engine, built for high performance, security, and reliability.

Why it matters

GovCloud is isolated from AWS's standard regions to serve government and regulated workloads, so new models usually take a while to show up there. With GPT-5.6 now rolling out to GovCloud, teams working under strict compliance requirements can finally reach for OpenAI's newest models through Bedrock too.

What changes

GPT-5.6 sets a new bar for both how hard a problem it can solve and how much intelligence it packs per token. It comes in two models with different roles:

  • Terra: balanced performance, delivering GPT-5.5-level capability at half the cost
  • Luna: fast, cost-efficient inference at the lowest price point

That means GovCloud customers can now build autonomous coding agents, run long-horizon genomics and biology analyses, and carry out advanced cybersecurity research with these newer models.
