What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon S3 Vectors is now available in AWS GovCloud (US-East) and AWS GovCloud (US-West).

S3 Vectors is a purpose-built vector storage service for AI agents, inference, RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation), and semantic search. It's designed to scale to billions of vectors, offering the same elasticity, durability, and availability as Amazon S3, with a dedicated set of APIs to store, access, and query vectors — no infrastructure provisioning required.

Why it matters

GovCloud is the AWS Region built for government agencies and related organizations with strict regulatory and compliance requirements. Those organizations naturally want to build AI agent and RAG applications too, but they've often had access to fewer services than commercial regions.

Vector search is a core building block for RAG and semantic search, so not having it in GovCloud meant needing an AI app with no vector store to build it on. Closing that gap is the big deal with this announcement.

What changes

Government agencies and regulated customers on GovCloud can now store and query vectors with S3 Vectors, without building or managing infrastructure themselves. That makes it easier to build AI applications with RAG or semantic search while staying within a compliant region.
