Hi everyone, it's me, Shii-chan! I've got good news today for anyone using AWS Glue — an update that makes hopping between your data tools a lot smoother.

What was announced?

AWS's What's New announced that AWS Glue's console now offers one-click access to Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio.

If you're browsing the catalog or building ETL jobs in the Glue console, you can now jump straight into SageMaker Unified Studio and keep going — querying your data, running data quality checks, and building pipelines, all in one smooth flow. With this update, one-click access to SageMaker Unified Studio is now available from five consoles:

  • S3 Tables
  • Athena
  • EMR
  • Redshift
  • Glue

Glue just joined that lineup.

The story so far

Until now, even if you were working with catalogs or ETL jobs in the Glue console, getting into SageMaker Unified Studio took extra steps. If you hadn't set up SageMaker Unified Studio yet, you had to head over to the IAM console and switch browser tabs just to create the IAM policies you needed.

What changes

Now, a new inline permissions panel right inside the Glue console lets you create and configure the IAM policies you need on the spot, no more switching over to the IAM console.

You can keep using your existing IAM role and customize permissions in context, which cuts down the number of steps to get started. That means you can move from browsing the catalog in Glue to querying data in SageMaker notebooks, using the same IAM role the whole way through, without the flow ever breaking.
