What was announced?

According to Anthropic's Claude Blog, Claude Cowork's desktop app now ships with a built-in browser. Until now, delegating web work to Claude meant using the "Claude in Chrome" extension. This new browser is separate: a dedicated, isolated browser just for Claude. When a task needs web access, it opens automatically in the desktop app's side panel, and Claude reads pages, fills out forms, and gathers information on its own.

The story so far

Before this, getting Claude to act autonomously on the web meant installing an extension, or letting Claude operate inside an environment closer to your own everyday browser. Your tabs and logged-in accounts could end up mixed in with what Claude could see, which left a bit of uncertainty about how much access Claude actually had.

What changes

The new built-in browser is completely separate from your own. Claude can't access your tabs, bookmarks, or saved passwords at all. And since there's nothing to install, you can start using it the moment you open Cowork. While Claude works through a task in its own browser, you're free to keep working on your own.

If you need Claude to act using an account you're already logged into, "Claude in Chrome" is still there too. The idea is to let you switch between the two browsers depending on what you need.

  • Login import is opt-in: on macOS you can pull logins from Chrome, Edge, or Firefox; on Windows and Linux, only from Firefox
  • Banking, email, and single sign-on (SSO) sites are excluded by default unless you explicitly enable them
  • It includes the same prompt injection defenses and action verification checks as Claude in Chrome
