Claude Code's Projects Just Evolved From Folders Into Conversations

Hi, it's shiichan! I just read some big news about Claude Code's Projects getting redesigned, and I could not wait to tell you about it.

What was announced?

According to the Claude Blog, Claude's Projects have been redesigned and are now rolling out in beta for Claude Code cloud sessions. The headline change is that you can describe a goal, and Claude manages the work for you.

Claude scopes the request, delegates the work, coordinates parallel threads, reviews the outputs, and assembles the finished result. You can steer progress from anywhere, even your phone, and it keeps working after you step away from your computer.

For example, you could set a goal to reduce your app's checkout p75 latency, and Claude will profile each endpoint, test optimizations, and open PRs across parallel threads. Or connect your API, web, and mobile repos and set a goal to retire a deprecated v1 endpoint: Claude creates one thread per repo to migrate the callers, run the tests, open PRs, and tell you which ones need to merge first.

Starting today, updated projects are available in beta to select Claude Pro and Max subscribers who use cloud sessions in Claude Code and don't already have existing projects on the web or desktop.

The story so far

Until now, Projects were a static, folder-based way to organize files and chats. If you wanted to manage work that spanned multiple sessions, you had to divide the work yourself, juggle the handoffs, and stitch the results back together by hand.

In other words, all the scoping and coordination was on you. Projects were a place to keep things, not something that actively moved the work forward.

What changes

The new Projects have threads that do the work and a coordinator that directs them. When you start a project, you pick a goal along with the repo or context, and Claude suggests work it can pick up right away. You can also configure the project's cloud environment, connectors, plugins, instructions, and model.

You can monitor and guide progress in the main project chat, or drop into an individual thread to check and steer the details. Brief Claude the way you'd brief a chief of staff, and it routes work to new or existing threads.

Claude also builds memory over time. Every thread now reads from and writes to a shared memory, so it can remember things like the release moving to Friday, why an export got dropped, or who to check with before touching the billing service, without you needing to re-explain it every time. You can also tell Claude how often to check in, how often to start new threads, and how detailed updates should be.

On top of that, projects now include a library that collects the files you add and the artifacts Claude produces, making it easier to find past work and build on it.

Dive Deep

Under the hood, each thread is its own Claude Code cloud session, working on its own branch and its own copy of the repo. The coordinator keeps everything organized, and if two threads happen to touch the same code, it's resolved as a merge conflict, just like any other PR. Each thread can also split its own work further using subagents, loops, and workflows, so large assignments finish faster.

You can choose the model and effort level separately for the coordinator chat and for the worker threads. Since a project can run several cloud sessions at once, it can also hit usage limits faster, so there's project-specific usage tracking to help you keep an eye on that.

Here's how the rollout is timed:

  • Today: beta access for select Pro and Max subscribers using cloud sessions in Claude Code, without existing web or desktop projects
  • This coming week: expanding to more Claude Code users on those plans
  • After that: rolling out to chat, Cowork, and Team and Enterprise plans
  • Existing projects keep working as-is and get upgraded as the rollout reaches chat and Cowork
  • If you're on Pro or Max without access yet, you can join the waitlist

Threads run in the cloud for now, but running them on your own machine, alongside your local tools, code, and network, is coming very soon.

Wrap-up

  • Claude Code's Projects moved from static, folder-based organization to a conversation-driven system where Claude manages the work
  • Just describe a goal, and Claude scopes it, delegates it across parallel threads, and assembles the results
  • Each thread is its own Claude Code cloud session running on its own branch
  • Shared memory across threads means Claude remembers project details like deadlines and who owns what
  • Beta access starts today, expands this week, and later reaches chat, Cowork, Team, and Enterprise plans

If you're the kind of engineer who wants Claude Code to own a whole multi-repo task from start to finish, this update is basically calling your name!
