Claude Code v2.1.246 Ships Over 60 Fixes in a Big Update!

Hey everyone, it's Shii-chan! I checked out the latest Claude Code release today, and there's a lot in it, so let's get into it!

What was announced?

This comes from the Claude Code Release channel. Version v2.1.246 shipped, bringing over 60 changes ranging from new features to security-related fixes. Let me pick out the highlights.

The story so far

A few things were bugging users before this release. For example, in sessions using a third-party gateway (ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL), telemetry and metrics requests could end up carrying the API key configured for that gateway. There was also a case where malformed Bash commands with a dangling && or || could run without requiring approval.

What changes

This release fixes both of those security-related issues. Telemetry and metrics credentials are now only sent to their own intended host. Malformed Bash commands now always require approval.

On the feature side, /permissions gained an Auto mode tab for viewing and editing auto mode classifier rules. There's also a new startup warning for Bash allow rules with a wildcard placed before the subcommand (like Bash(git * main)), since those patterns can also match unexpected options slipped in before the subcommand, a subtle but welcome safety improvement.

For non-interactive sessions (-p, the SDK, cloud sessions), a response cut off mid-stream by a server error or dropped connection is now automatically continued instead of just failing. And when a subagent hits its maxTurns limit, it now returns its output marked as partial with a hint to continue it via SendMessage, instead of appearing to have finished normally.

Dive Deep

There's a long list of smaller fixes too:

  • Several fullscreen rendering issues (blank transcript after resize, scrolling glitches, and more)
  • Background sessions failing to start in various situations (deleted starting directory, machine woke from sleep, another process reinstalling the npm package)
  • Duplicate rows and stuck-stopping issues in claude agents
  • Plugin issues: duplicate cache directories, skills reporting as 0, failures with a BOM in plugin.json
  • The Write tool showing "Out of memory" or freezing after overwriting a very large file (the write itself had actually succeeded)
  • Memory growth over long sessions in the fullscreen and Ctrl+O transcript views
  • /cd: the new directory's project settings, hooks, .mcp.json servers, skills, and agents now take effect immediately instead of waiting for --resume
  • Bash tool latency improvements from changing how snapshot functions are replayed

Wrap-up

  • Security fixes: no more credential leakage to third-party gateways, and malformed Bash commands always require approval
  • New Auto mode tab in /permissions, plus a startup warning for risky Bash allow rules
  • Automatic continuation for non-interactive sessions cut off mid-stream, and partial results for subagents that hit their turn limit
  • Over 60 fixes and improvements across fullscreen rendering, background sessions, plugins, memory usage, and more

Whether you use Claude Code daily, run it through a third-party gateway, or lean on plugins and large sessions, this is an update worth paying attention to!
