Claude Code's auto mode now runs server-side classification with zero overhead billing!
Hi, I'm Shiichan!
Claude Code ReleaseToday I want to share a small but nice update to Claude Code: v2.1.278.
What was announced?
According to the Claude Code Release notes, v2.1.278 changes the default behavior of auto mode. This applies to Claude API and Enterprise users, as well as users on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry, and gateways. In these environments, auto mode now defaults to using a server-side classifier, and this server-side classifier does not charge for classifier overhead.
Why it matters
Auto mode automatically routes requests based on their content, and until now the classification step itself carried some overhead cost. With server-side classification now the default, that overhead billing goes away. It's a small change, but a welcome one for anyone who relies on auto mode regularly.
What changes
- Claude API, Enterprise, Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry, and gateway users get the overhead-free classifier by default, with no action needed
- You'll now see a warning when a billed fallback occurs
- If you want the previous behavior, you can opt out on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry, and gateways with the environment variable

Dive Deep
This release also adds a new "Auto mode server" row to the /status command, so you can check whether your current session's auto mode classifier is running on the server. More details on the billing mechanics are available in the official docs at https://code.claude.com/docs/en/auto-mode-classifier-billing.
Wrap-up
- Claude Code v2.1.278 makes server-side classification the default for auto mode
- It applies to Claude API, Enterprise, Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry, and gateway users
- Classifier overhead billing is removed, with warnings shown for billed fallbacks
- You can opt out on Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry, and gateways via
