Cloudflare Just Swept Both SASE and SSE Visionary Spots!

Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! I found some great news from the network security world today.

Cloudflare Blog blog.cloudflare.com

What was announced?

On the Cloudflare Blog, the team announced that Cloudflare has been named a Visionary in both the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for SASE Platforms and the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Security Service Edge (SSE). And Cloudflare is the only vendor recognized as a Visionary in both reports!

Why it matters

The SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) and SSE (Security Service Edge) markets are said to be at an inflection point. SSE took off as organizations secured remote work during the pandemic, while SASE has gained traction more recently alongside return-to-office mandates.

In the post, Cloudflare points out that today's market still has gaps: many competitors offer architectures built by merging separate products after the fact, which makes deployment and operations more complex. Cloudflare frames its own approach as a "connectivity cloud" — one global network that connects and protects not just people, but AI agents and infrastructure too.

What changes

The post highlights a few areas where Cloudflare says it's differentiating itself:

  • AI agent governance: Cloudflare says it's the first SASE platform to rein in MCP server sprawl, giving AI agents the same kind of access controls as human users, plus cost caps per user, team, or application
  • Post-quantum security: post-quantum encryption is already deployed across all major on- and off-ramps, aimed at protecting regulated industries from "harvest-now, decrypt-later" threats
  • Pricing: predictable, value-driven SASE bundles with no hidden fees, in contrast to the add-on-heavy pricing common among legacy vendors

Dive Deep

The post also touches on four themes it expects to shape the future of this space:

  • Securing shadow IT apps
  • Access controls for autonomous AI agents
  • Quantum-resistant infrastructure, with a goal of full quantum security by 2028
  • Genuine architectural consolidation, not just a surface-level merge

These are the same pain points a lot of organizations are wrestling with today when choosing a SASE or SSE vendor.

Wrap-up

  • Cloudflare was named a Visionary in both the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for SASE Platforms and the one for SSE — the only vendor recognized in both
  • The market's history traces from SSE for remote work to SASE for return-to-office
  • Cloudflare highlights AI agent governance, post-quantum encryption, and simple pricing as differentiators
  • Looking ahead: shadow IT, autonomous agent access control, quantum resistance, and true consolidation

Worth a read if you're evaluating network security vendors, or just want to keep an eye on where SASE and SSE are headed next!
