Bot Management Drops Fixed Model Versions: Adaptive Intelligence Keeps Learning!

Hi, it's Shii-chan! Today I'm sharing a pretty big change to Cloudflare Bot Management, and I'm really excited about it!

Cloudflare Changelog developers.cloudflare.com

What was announced?

Cloudflare's Changelog announced Adaptive Intelligence, a new bot detection engine. The machine learning model behind your bot score now retrains more frequently instead of shipping as a fixed, numbered version.

The goal is to close the gap between when an attack pattern first appears and when protection against it reaches every customer.

The story so far

The model used to ship as numbered versions. When new bypass tools and bot frameworks showed up, what the model learned about them had to wait for a scheduled release.

What changes

  • When new bypass tools and bot frameworks appear, the model learns from them and folds that knowledge in
  • No waiting for a scheduled release
  • No version to migrate

If you use Bot Management, you no longer need to think about model version management or migrations.

Dive Deep

You might wonder whether automatic updates are safe. According to the announcement, every update is validated first.

  • New model versions run in shadow mode first (scored, but not acted on)
  • They are compared against the current model
  • Then they roll out gradually

Enterprise customers with Auto-update machine learning switched on under Bot Management configurations get Adaptive Intelligence automatically, with no version to migrate and nothing else to configure.

Wrap-up

  • Bot Management's model moves from fixed versions to frequently retrained Adaptive Intelligence
  • New bot tactics are picked up without waiting for a scheduled release
  • Shadow mode, comparison, and gradual rollout keep updates safe
  • Enterprise customers with Auto-update machine learning on get it with no extra setup

This one is for security folks on Enterprise plans who want bot defense to take less upkeep!
