Domain transfers now work through the Cloudflare Registrar API beta!
Hi everyone, Shii-chan here! Today I found a Cloudflare update that makes domain management a bit easier to automate!
Cloudflare ChangelogWhat was announced?
According to the Cloudflare Changelog, the Cloudflare Registrar API beta now supports domain transfers.
Here is what you can do through the API:
- Start a transfer of a supported domain into Cloudflare Registrar
- Check the progress of a transfer with a dedicated status endpoint
The story so far
The announcement says transfers are what is new in this beta, so starting one through the API was not available before. Transfers were probably handled outside the API, for example in the dashboard.
What changes
You can now script a transfer from start to finish, including progress checks. That helps if you want to consolidate many domains into Cloudflare or build transfers into your own tooling.
Dive Deep
There are a few conditions to meet before you start:
- The domain must already have a zone in your Cloudflare account
- DNSSEC must be disabled
- Most extensions need an authorization code or EPP code from the current registrar
Transfers are asynchronous. They typically take 1 to 10 days, so your client should poll the status endpoint to follow the workflow.
For request and response details, see the Initiate Transfer and Get Transfer Status API references linked from the original post.
Wrap-up
- The Registrar API beta now supports domain transfers
- You can start a transfer and check its status through dedicated endpoints
- You need a zone, DNSSEC disabled, and an authorization (EPP) code in advance
- Transfers typically take 1 to 10 days, so design for polling
This one is for infrastructure folks who want to automate domain operations!
