Cloudflare Data Platform Is Now Basin, and It's GA!
Hi, Shii-chan here! A whole data analytics platform just went GA under a new name!
Cloudflare ChangelogWhat was announced?
The Cloudflare Changelog announced that the former Cloudflare Data Platform is now generally available as Basin. It is an end-to-end analytics platform: you collect data from apps, infrastructure, devices, and other Cloudflare services, then query it.
The story so far
These pieces used to ship under separate names.
- Cloudflare Pipelines is now Basin Pipelines
- R2 Data Catalog is now Basin Catalog
- R2 SQL is now Basin SQL
What changes
Ingestion, table management, and querying now live under one brand on the Developer Platform. Legacy resources keep working during a deprecation period.
Dive Deep
Basin Pipelines
It ingests events from Workers, HTTP endpoints, and Cloudflare Logpush, transforms them with SQL, and writes them to Iceberg tables or files on R2.
- Ingest application and device events through HTTP endpoints or Workers bindings
- Filter and reshape Cloudflare logs before storing them as Iceberg tables, Parquet, or JSON
- Catch schema mismatches with typed bindings and investigate dropped events in the dashboard
Basin Catalog
It manages and automatically maintains Apache Iceberg tables.
- Connect DuckDB, Spark, Snowflake, or PyIceberg to the same tables
- Maintain growing tables with compaction, snapshot expiration, and manifest optimization
- Share analytical data across tools and clouds without paying egress fees
Basin SQL
A serverless, distributed SQL engine for querying large Iceberg tables in Basin Catalog without managing compute.
- Summarize and rank data with standard and approximate aggregates, grouping sets, and window functions
- Combine datasets with joins, subqueries, common table expressions, and set operations
- Transform data with more than 190 functions
Wrap-up
- The former Data Platform is GA as Basin
- Three components: Pipelines, Catalog, and SQL
- Iceberg-compatible engines can use the same tables
- Legacy resources keep working during the deprecation period
This is for anyone who found building a data lake by hand too much work!
