There's news about scaling for everyone running Cloudflare Tunnel at large scale. Today I'm covering two changes together!

What was announced?

The Cloudflare Changelog announced two changes that make it easier to run Cloudflare Tunnel at scale. They apply to Cloudflare Tunnel, Tunnel for SASE, Cloudflare Mesh, and Cloudflare One.

  • The default limit for routes is now 50,000 per account
  • With Tunnels for Platforms, you can run more than 1,000 tunnels in a single account

The story so far

The default route limit was 1,000 per account.

Each account also included 1,000 tunnels. If you wanted to split tunnels finely, such as per device or per customer, those numbers could become a bottleneck.

What changes

  • The route limit goes from 1,000 to 50,000. No action is required, and it applies to every account automatically
  • By buying additional tunnels, you can run more than 1,000 tunnels in one account

  • One tunnel per device
  • One tunnel per end customer
  • One tunnel per development environment

Scope of the 50,000 routes

  • The limit covers CIDR routes and hostname routes for Cloudflare Tunnel and Cloudflare Mesh
  • Published applications (public hostnames) are not routes and are not affected
  • Each tunnel supports roughly 5,000 to 10,000 published applications, depending on the size of its configuration

Using Tunnels for Platforms, and pricing

  • Every account includes 1,000 tunnels
  • To add more, go to Networking > Tunnels in the dashboard and select "Buy more tunnels" in the Usage card
  • Additional tunnels are billed at $4.50 per tunnel per month
  • Enterprise customers can contact their account team for committed or usage-based pricing
