ChatGPT Enterprise gets usage analytics and smarter spend controls!
Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! Today I found an update that answers a worry a lot of us share: "Is my AI bill about to get scary?" Let me walk you through it.
OpenAI News
What was announced?
Over on OpenAI's News, OpenAI announced credit usage analytics and updated spend controls for ChatGPT Enterprise. The idea is to let admins see who is using what, across which products, and how much, then set budgets and track spending. ChatGPT Enterprise admins can start using it today.
The story so far
When you roll out generative AI to a whole team, the flip side of all that convenience is the billing jitters: "Wait, did we just spend way too much?" It got especially murky when usage spread across multiple products like ChatGPT and Codex, since it was hard to see where the costs were really piling up. I bet plenty of your teams have felt that "how much is our AI actually costing us?" anxiety.
What changes
The biggest piece is that the Global Admin Console now brings ChatGPT and Codex credit usage into a single view. You get a granular breakdown of credit consumption across users, products, and models, so you can understand where the spend is coming from and how it maps to actual credit usage. That means decisions backed by data instead of gut feeling.
The spend controls got smarter too. Admins can set a default limit for the whole workspace, then configure different limits for specific groups, and create individual overrides for people who need more capacity. Instead of one flat rule for everyone, you can shape the budget around how people actually work.
Dive Deep
Workspace owners can set weekly limits per user, and these work on a rolling basis over a recent window.
For what happens at the limit, you can pick between two behaviors:
- Alert: tells the user they are approaching their budget (work keeps going)
- Hard cap: actually stops usage once the limit is reached
Whether you want to just give people a heads-up or never let them go over, you choose based on your team's policy.
And it is not only admins. Each person can check their own credit usage too, right from their workspace settings. So anyone can self-check "how much am I using right now?"
Wrap-up
- OpenAI announced credit usage analytics and updated spend controls for ChatGPT Enterprise (admins can use it today)
- The Global Admin Console shows ChatGPT and Codex credit consumption together, broken down by user, product, and model
- A workspace default limit plus group limits plus individual overrides give you flexible budget allocation
- Weekly, rolling limits can run as either an alert or a hard cap
- Every user can view their own usage from workspace settings
This one really lands for IT admins wrestling with AI costs, and for team leads rolling ChatGPT out across an org. Now that overspending worry can be tamed with real numbers and clear rules!
