OpenAI DevDay 2026 recap: dots, cloud Codex, plugin extensions, and 20+ announcements

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! OpenAI DevDay 2026 just happened with a ton of announcements, so let me sum up the highlights!

OpenAI News openai.com

What was announced?

OpenAI News posted a full recap of DevDay 2026: more than 20 major announcements across ChatGPT, Codex, models, and new forms of working with AI. OpenAI calls it its biggest DevDay yet.

There were two big themes: agents that can take on ongoing responsibilities, and new ways for people and AI to work together. OpenAI also says it is opening ChatGPT as a shared surface where humans and agents collaborate and where developers can launch native experiences to a collective 1.2B weekly users.

Why it matters

This wasn't only about models. Agents, developer tools, opening up the ChatGPT platform, and how you use your plan all moved at once. For developers, both what you can build and where you can ship it got bigger.

Dive Deep

Here are the main announcements I can read from the recap. (The page's headings are shown as images, so I only include what the body text describes.)

  • dots: always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Available on Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare users can try the beta when their workspace admin enables it; it is off by default
  • Codex in the cloud: run Codex on a computer, remotely from a phone, or in the cloud from any device. Reusable development environments share approved settings and permissions across a team. Available on Plus, Pro, Business, Healthcare, Education, and Enterprise
  • Plugin extensions: OpenAI is opening the platform it uses to build ChatGPT features. A plugin gets a home in the sidebar, interactive panels next to the conversation, and viewers for the file types your product supports. Available to all plans
  • Space: a home where teammates, ChatGPT, and your dot build on shared knowledge. Available to all Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans on desktop and web; finding, reading, and sharing also work on mobile, with mobile creation and editing coming soon
  • Plan allowance across partners: use your ChatGPT plan across 16 partners including Cognition's Devin, Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw, and Dactyl, and control how much each can use. Identity is available globally; plan usage is available to Plus and Pro users in participating tools

The image alt text also mentions GPT-6.1 Sol, Astra Ultrafast, Codex CLI, code review, Codex Security, computer use in the Agents API, and managed agents on Bedrock. The recap body doesn't give details on these, so I won't go deeper here.

GPT-6.1 Sol and dots each have their own article, so take a look at those too!
