What was announced?

OpenAI News announced that OpenAI Academy, a platform for learning how to apply AI to real work, is adding new learning paths for developers, leaders, educators, and college students. Together with the existing Apply AI at Work path for knowledge workers, OpenAI Academy now has four learning paths in total.

  • Apply AI at Work (3 courses, for knowledge workers)
  • Build with AI (8 courses, for developers)
  • Lead AI Adoption (1 course, for leaders)
  • Teach and Learn with AI (2 courses, for educators and students)

Each course includes an assessment, and learners earn an OpenAI Academy course badge when they pass it.

The story so far

Until now, OpenAI Academy only offered Apply AI at Work, aimed at knowledge workers. It helped learners practice giving clear instructions, adding context, and reviewing responses, then turning successful approaches into reusable workflows. There wasn't yet a dedicated path for developers, leaders, or education-focused audiences.

What changes

With this expansion, organizations can now mix and match learning paths that fit each role.

  • Apply AI at Work for employee onboarding
  • Build with AI for developers and technical teams
  • AI Leadership for executives, Champion programs, or transformation initiatives
  • AI Foundations combined with AI for Educators and AI for College Students for education institutions

This role-based structure makes it easier for organizations to build shared habits around using AI across teams.

Dive Deep

Let's look at each path in a bit more detail.

Build with AI (for developers) targets developers and technical teams using Codex or building on the OpenAI API. It covers planning and implementing changes across the software development lifecycle while keeping review and quality under control. For teams building on the API, it covers solution design, evaluations, agents, retrieving relevant information, and operating AI systems in production.

Lead AI Adoption (for leaders) includes the AI Leadership course, which helps people responsible for strategy, adoption, and change management identify where AI can create business value. Learners connect an initiative to business priorities, define ownership and governance, and build an initial AI strategy and roadmap.

Teach and Learn with AI (for educators and students) includes two courses. AI for Educators helps learners plan classes, create activities or assessments, and adapt communications with ChatGPT, while checking the results against their learning objectives and source materials. AI for College Students focuses on academic and career tasks: organizing readings and deadlines into a study plan, assigning roles in group projects, reviewing drafts against requirements, and preparing for applications or interviews.

There's also an OpenAI Academy Deployment Guide to support rollout, with recommendations for introducing the courses, engaging leaders and managers, building participation, and tracking progress.
