ChatGPT Can Connect to Your Accounts Now: A New Personal Finance Experience!

Hey everyone, it's me! Today I've got great news for anyone who wants to get on better terms with their money. ChatGPT can now connect to your bank and brokerage accounts and talk through your whole financial picture with you. I read through the details with a big smile!

OpenAI News openai.com

What was announced?

Over on OpenAI's News, OpenAI unveiled a new personal finance experience in ChatGPT. You can securely connect your financial accounts, see a dashboard of where your money is going, and ask ChatGPT questions grounded in your own financial context. It first rolled out as a preview to Pro users in the U.S. on May 15, 2026, and a June 25, 2026 update brought it to Plus and Pro users in the U.S. on web, iOS, and Android.

Instead of shipping to everyone at once, OpenAI started with a small group to learn from real-world use and expand thoughtfully.

Why it matters

Money touches nearly every part of life. But managing it today often means piecing together accounts, apps, cards, loans, and spreadsheets just to know where you stand, and it can still be hard to see the full picture or know what to do next.

On top of that, more than 200 million people already come to ChatGPT every month for budgeting, investment questions, comparing paths, and planning goals. Recent advances in GPT-5.5 make ChatGPT stronger at the complex, context-dependent reasoning that personal finance so often needs.

What changes

With your accounts connected, ChatGPT combines that reasoning with your real financial context and what you've shared about your goals and priorities, so it can help you spot patterns, weigh tradeoffs, and plan for big decisions. You can ask things like:

  • Goal planning
  • Travel spend analysis
  • Spending insights
  • Scenario planning
  • Investment risks
  • Subscription review

One important note: ChatGPT can help you feel more confident about your money, but it is not a replacement for professional financial advice. Keep that in mind!

Dive Deep

Getting started is simple. Open "Finances" from the ChatGPT sidebar and pick "Get started," or say "@Finances, connect my accounts" from anywhere. ChatGPT then links your accounts securely through Plaid, with Intuit support coming soon. After you authenticate, syncing and categorizing begins, which may take a few minutes.

It supports more than 12,000 financial institutions! Once synced, you get a dashboard covering portfolio performance, spending, subscriptions, upcoming payments, and more. You can also share context like "I'm saving to buy a car early next year," and ChatGPT saves it as a Financial memory to inform future conversations.

Privacy is handled with care. ChatGPT can see your balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities, but it cannot see full account numbers or make changes to your accounts. Model-training use follows your choice in Settings > Data controls, and if you disconnect an account, the synced data is deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. Temporary chats don't touch your connected accounts, and you can turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for extra protection.

Quality got attention too. Conversations with connected accounts default to GPT-5.5 Thinking, the latest reasoning model in ChatGPT. OpenAI built an internal benchmark with over 50 finance professionals: out of 100, GPT-5.5 Thinking scored 79, and GPT-5.5 Pro (for Pro users) took the top spot at 82.5.

And it's not just about answering. Working with trusted partners like Intuit, the vision is to move from answers to action inside ChatGPT, from a credit card recommendation to checking approval odds and applying, or from a question about the taxes on a stock sale to a trusted estimate and booking a session with a local tax expert.

Wrap-up

  • Connect financial accounts to ChatGPT and see spending, assets, subscriptions, and upcoming payments in one dashboard
  • Supports 12,000+ institutions via Plaid, with Intuit support coming soon
  • Conversations default to GPT-5.5 Thinking; on a benchmark built with 50+ finance pros it scored 79/100 (GPT-5.5 Pro: 82.5)
  • Privacy-first: no full account numbers, no account changes, data deleted within 30 days after disconnecting, plus MFA
  • Available now to Plus and Pro users in the U.S. (web, iOS, Android); not a substitute for professional advice

This one really lands for anyone who wants to see their money as a whole instead of scattered pieces and figure out the next move. I can't wait for the day it's available to everyone!
