OpenAI Launches a Journalism Support Program for the Next Generation of Reporters!
Hi there, it's me, Shiichan! Today I've got a story from OpenAI News about supporting education and journalism.
OpenAI NewsWhat was announced?
OpenAI News announced a major, multi-faceted initiative to support the journalism ecosystem — tools, training, partnerships, shared learning, and practical enablement for students, educators, journalists, and news organizations.
As the first step, OpenAI is partnering with two schools known for journalism and technology: CUNY's Newmark J-School and Northwestern University's Medill School. Starting in the 2026–2027 academic year, OpenAI is providing more than 400 ChatGPT Edu subscriptions to interested graduate students and faculty there.
Why it matters
Journalism is going through one of the most demanding moments in its history right now. AI is already helping reporters, editors, and business teams analyze public records faster, translate stories for wider audiences, find patterns in large datasets, search archives, and improve reader experiences.
That's exactly why journalism students need more than just access to the tools — they need to learn to use AI thoughtfully, creatively, ethically, and responsibly. Gina Chua, Executive Director of the Tow-Knight Center, said generative AI will reshape the information landscape and that journalism needs to adapt to it and help shape it, and that she wants the Newmark community to be at the forefront of that transformation.
What changes
Graduate students and faculty at Newmark and Medill can now use ChatGPT Edu without cost being a barrier, while learning responsible workflows and understanding AI's limitations. As Medill's Jeremy Gilbert put it, equity of access matters when bringing in new technology — meaning future reporters can build AI fluency before they ever set foot in a newsroom.
Dive Deep
This new partnership builds on years of OpenAI's existing journalism support:
- American Journalism Project: all 50+ news organizations in its portfolio get access to ChatGPT Enterprise and API credits
- Lenfest Institute: helps news organizations hire AI engineering fellows to build and scale projects
- WAN-IFRA: an ongoing partnership since 2024 that has trained and supported over 165 newsrooms worldwide through its Newsroom AI Catalyst accelerator
- INMA: supports international news organizations with regional discussions, webinars, and API credits
OpenAI also funded the launch of NYU's Ethics and Journalism Initiative back in 2023, and has run trainings at journalist association conferences, feeding into the OpenAI Academy for News Organizations.
