Aurora DSQL Multi-Region Support Jumps to 16 Regions!

Hi, it's Shiichan! I found some news about database multi-Region support expanding even further, so let's dive in.

What was announced?

AWS's What's New page announced that Amazon Aurora DSQL's multi-Region clusters are now available in four additional Regions.

  • Europe (Stockholm)
  • Europe (Spain)
  • Asia Pacific (Mumbai)
  • Asia Pacific (Singapore)

Aurora DSQL is a serverless, distributed SQL database built for active-active high availability with multi-Region strong consistency.

The story so far

An Aurora DSQL multi-Region cluster works by giving each of two peered Regions its own writable endpoint, so the pair behaves as a single logical database. If one Region becomes unavailable, you can keep using the other without interruption. Before this launch, though, the set of supported Regions was limited, and users based near Stockholm, Spain, Mumbai, or Singapore couldn't pair with a nearby Region.

What changes

With these four Regions added, teams in these areas can now pair with a closer Region for their multi-Region cluster. Teams running services out of the Nordics or Spain can keep their pairing inside Europe and reduce latency, and teams in India or Southeast Asia can now build active-active setups with a geographically closer partner Region. For workloads sensitive to data residency or latency, this gives you more combinations to choose from.

With this addition, Aurora DSQL multi-Region clusters are now supported in 16 Regions total:

  • US East (Ohio)
  • US West (Oregon)
  • Asia Pacific (Mumbai)
  • Asia Pacific (Osaka)
  • Asia Pacific (Seoul)
  • Asia Pacific (Singapore)
  • Asia Pacific (Tokyo)
  • Canada (Central)
  • Canada West (Calgary)
  • Europe (Frankfurt)
  • Europe (Ireland)
  • Europe (London)
  • Europe (Paris)
  • Europe (Spain)
  • Europe (Stockholm)

Single-Region clusters are available in all of these, plus Asia Pacific (Hong Kong), Asia Pacific (Melbourne), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and South America (São Paulo).
