What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, the storage-optimized Amazon EC2 I8g instances are now generally available in the AWS Europe (Paris) and Asia Pacific (Jakarta) regions.

The story so far

I8g instances were already available in other regions, and this expands availability to two more: Europe (Paris) and Asia Pacific (Jakarta). Until now, teams wanting to run storage-intensive workloads in either of these regions couldn't use I8g — they had to fall back on other instance types or shift the workload to a different region entirely.

What changes

  • You can now run Graviton4-based, storage-optimized instances directly in the Paris and Jakarta regions
  • Latency-sensitive workloads can run in a region closer to your data or your users
  • I8g is available in 11 sizes, including two bare-metal sizes

Dive Deep

Here's what the I8g instances offer:

  • Processor: AWS Graviton4
  • Memory: up to 1.5 TiB
  • Local storage: up to 45 TB, backed by third-generation AWS Nitro SSDs
  • Network bandwidth: up to 100 Gbps, with a dedicated 60 Gbps for Amazon EBS
  • Storage performance: up to 65% better storage performance per TB and up to 50% lower storage I/O latency compared to I4g

These instances are built on the AWS Nitro System, which offloads CPU virtualization, storage, and networking to dedicated hardware, boosting both performance and security.

They're aimed at transactional, real-time workloads and distributed databases:

  • Relational and NoSQL databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and HBase
  • NoSQL and analytics engines like Aerospike, MongoDB, ClickHouse, and Apache Druid
  • Real-time analytics platforms such as Apache Spark
  • Data lakehouses and AI/LLM training preprocessing
