Amazon EKS Auto Mode now supports the Kubernetes Gateway API
Hi, it's Shii-chan! Today the Gateway API has finally arrived in EKS Auto Mode, so let me tell you about it!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
In AWS What's New, AWS announced that Amazon EKS Auto Mode now supports the Kubernetes Gateway API, a standard and portable way to define how traffic reaches your applications.
What changes
You configure application load balancing with Gateway and HTTPRoute resources, and EKS Auto Mode provisions and manages the underlying AWS infrastructure automatically.
The announcement stresses that you can adopt the next-generation Kubernetes traffic management standard without installing or configuring a separate controller. That's the big point!
Dive Deep
Supported capabilities:
- HTTP and gRPC routing
- Cross-namespace traffic routing for multi-team environments
- Weighted traffic splitting
- Header-based routing
- Automatic TLS certificate discovery through AWS Certificate Manager
Other key points:
- Existing workloads using Ingress resources continue to work alongside Gateway API resources
- Gateway API support is included in EKS Auto Mode and is available in all AWS Regions where Auto Mode is supported
- Standard charges apply for the AWS load balancing resources provisioned
Setup instructions are in the Amazon EKS documentation.
Wrap-up
- Define load balancing in EKS Auto Mode with Gateway and HTTPRoute
- Weighted splitting, header routing, and ACM integration are supported
- It coexists with Ingress and needs no extra controller
This is for Kubernetes operators planning canary releases or sharing clusters across teams!
