Today I want to share a nice update from AWS's What's New for anyone running VMware workloads.

What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, Amazon Elastic VMware Service (EVS) now supports the i7i.metal-48xl Amazon EC2 bare-metal instance type. EVS is a managed service for running VMware-based workloads on AWS, and this update gives you a new option with a higher core count and a newer generation processor.

The story so far

Until now, the instance types available on EVS were more limited. With the i4i instances used as the comparison baseline, scaling up the number of VMs meant adding more EVS hosts, since core count and memory/storage capacity per instance had their limits. The i7i.metal-48xl is powered by 5th generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, delivering up to 23% better compute performance and more than 10% better price-performance compared to i4i instances. It also comes with a larger memory and storage footprint, so you can run more VMs per host and scale vertically with fewer EVS hosts overall. On top of that, it makes it easier to take advantage of newer VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.x features, like memory tiering and the Amazon EVS Deployment Orchestrator, which simplifies onboarding.
