GameLift Container Fleets Now Support CPU Bursting for Peak Moments!

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

There's great news for people running game servers in containers, so let me walk you through it.

What was announced?

In AWS What's New, Amazon GameLift Servers announced CPU burstability for container fleets!

Game server containers can now run at their configured CPU level most of the time, and borrow idle CPU on the instance when load spikes.

The story so far

Until now, a single fixed CPU value did two jobs in container fleets:

  • It decided how many containers could be packed onto an instance (packing density)
  • It also acted as the hard cap on CPU usage at runtime

So you had to choose between efficient resource use and keeping headroom for peaks.

What changes

Game server load is bursty: low for most of a match, then spiking during physics calculations, AI processing, or collision detection.

With CPU burstability, you can pack containers based on typical CPU needs while letting server processes burst into idle CPU at peak moments. You get high-density deployments without giving up peak performance!

Dive Deep

Here is what the announcement tells us:

  • It is opt-in, configured per container group definition
  • It is included in standard container fleet pricing at no additional cost
  • It is available in AWS Regions where container fleets are supported, excluding China Regions

The announcement doesn't list specific setting names, so check the Amazon GameLift Servers Developer Guide for details.

Wrap-up

  • Container fleets now support CPU burstability
  • Packing density and the runtime cap are no longer tied together
  • Opt-in per container group definition, with no extra charge
  • Available in container-fleet Regions, excluding China Regions

This one is for game server teams who want both cost efficiency and peak performance!
