What was announced?

Over on AWS What's New, Amazon OpenSearch Service got a new one-click dashboard migration feature!

You can now migrate from legacy OpenSearch Dashboards to the new OpenSearch UI with just one click. OpenSearch UI is a new, zero-downtime, serverless interface for search and unified observability across multiple data sources. This migration works for both OpenSearch domains and serverless collections.

The story so far

Before this, if you wanted to bring tenants and saved objects from legacy OpenSearch Dashboards into the new OpenSearch UI, you had to recreate them manually. Since tenants and saved objects can number in the thousands, just moving between interfaces used to be a real operational burden.

What changes

With one-click migration, you can move your existing tenants and saved objects straight into OpenSearch UI workspaces without recreating anything by hand.

You can migrate everything into a brand-new workspace or into an existing one. And if you had multiple tenants in legacy Dashboards, you get to choose between:

  • Merging them into a single workspace
  • Keeping them separate per team

That should cut down on operational complexity quite a bit!

Dive Deep

This is available in every AWS Region where OpenSearch UI is available. For setup steps, check the "Using OpenSearch UI" page in the Amazon OpenSearch Service Developer Guide, and the OpenSearch UI Help page has detailed tutorials. The announcement didn't mention pricing or specific configuration parameters.
