Amazon RDS for Oracle Now Supports the July 2026 Supplemental Patch Bundle

Hi, it's me! Today I found a small but important update for anyone running Amazon RDS for Oracle.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports the Supplemental Patch Bundle (SPB) for the July 2026 Release Update (RU), covering Oracle Database versions 19c and 26ai.

The SPB bundles additional patches that Oracle recommends for specific use cases, including:

  • Oracle Spatial
  • Oracle Data Pump
  • Oracle GoldenGate

The story so far

This patch bundle used to be called the "Spatial Patch Bundle" through the April 2026 releases, but Oracle renamed it to the "Supplemental Patch Bundle (SPB)." In terms of what it actually does, it's a separate set of extra patches Oracle provides on top of the regular Release Updates, aimed at specific scenarios like Spatial, Data Pump, and GoldenGate. Amazon RDS for Oracle keeps adding support for these SPBs alongside each new RU release.

What changes

With this update, you can get an SPB-enabled engine version in one of two ways:

  • Choose an SPB-applied version when creating a new DB instance
  • Upgrade an existing instance from the AWS Management Console by selecting the "Supplemental Patch Bundle Engine Versions" checkbox

If you're running Oracle Spatial, Data Pump, or GoldenGate workloads on Amazon RDS for Oracle, applying this SPB lets you pick up Oracle's recommended fixes for those use cases.

Dive Deep

The specific engine versions supported this time are:

  • 19.0.0.0.ru-2026-07.spb-1.r1 (for Oracle Database 19c)
  • 26.0.0.0.ru-2026-07.spb-1.r1 (for Oracle Database 26ai)

You can check which SPBs are supported for each engine version in the Amazon RDS for Oracle release notes.

You can also roll this out using an AWS Organizations upgrade rollout policy. This lets you stagger automatic minor version upgrades across your organization, so you can:

  • Apply the automatic update to non-production environments first
  • Validate it there
  • Then automatically apply the same update to production environments

For teams who don't want to apply an update straight to production, being able to combine this with a staged rollout is a nice safety net.

Wrap-up

  • Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports the Supplemental Patch Bundle (formerly the Spatial Patch Bundle) for the July 2026 RU
  • It covers Oracle Database 19c and 26ai, with engine versions 19.0.0.0.ru-2026-07.spb-1.r1 and 26.0.0.0.ru-2026-07.spb-1.r1
  • The SPB includes extra patches for Oracle Spatial, Data Pump, and GoldenGate
  • You can apply it to new instances at creation time, or upgrade existing instances via a console checkbox
  • AWS Organizations upgrade rollout policy lets you stagger the automatic upgrade from non-production to production

This one's worth checking out if you're operating Oracle Spatial, Data Pump, or GoldenGate workloads on Amazon RDS for Oracle.
