WorkSpaces migration now works on stopped instances, with automatic rollback on failure!

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon WorkSpaces Personal now has two new capabilities that make bulk migration from the PCoIP protocol to the Amazon DCV protocol much easier.

  • Automatic rollback: if a protocol modification (migration) fails, the WorkSpace automatically rolls back to its pre-migration snapshot, returning to a known healthy state without any manual intervention
  • Migration for stopped WorkSpaces: administrators can now start a migration directly on a WorkSpace that is in a stopped state

Both build on the console-based migration workflow and checkpoint snapshot support that were launched recently.

The story so far

Previously, migrating a stopped WorkSpace required an administrator to manually start it first, before the protocol could be changed. That extra "start, then migrate" step added real overhead once you're dealing with a large number of WorkSpaces. The announcement doesn't spell out exactly how failed migrations were recovered before, but the strong emphasis on the new automatic, hands-off rollback suggests that recovering from a failed migration used to be a manual headache too.

What changes

Admins no longer need to start every stopped WorkSpace before migrating it, which should significantly speed up large-scale migrations. And because failed migrations now roll back automatically to the pre-migration snapshot, there's less risk of a WorkSpace being left in a broken state mid-migration. This is a genuinely useful update for IT admins managing large WorkSpaces fleets.
