Amazon ECS Gateway is here! It manages ALBs for you and lets 25 services share one
Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Here's an announcement that could make ECS networking much easier.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS announced Amazon ECS Gateway in What's New. It's a new Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) resource, a managed ingress solution that dynamically provisions and manages Application Load Balancers (ALBs) and their supporting resources in your account.
Why it matters
Designing the entry point for containerized apps is often a pain point between platform teams and application teams. ECS Gateway lets you define organizational networking standards in one place so teams can simply use them.
What changes
- Platform teams: define networking standards once on a gateway and associate it with one or more clusters, giving a central way to govern how traffic reaches ECS services
- Application teams: opt in to inherit those standards, with no networking expertise required
Dive Deep
Key features:
- Host-based routing, with a unique DNS hostname for each service
- Up to 25 services can share one ALB, which helps optimize infrastructure costs
- ECS provisions the first ALB when your first service connects, adds more when capacity is reached, and removes them when they are no longer needed
- You can inspect the resources and the gateway route to each service
- For monitoring, use standard ALB metrics in Amazon CloudWatch and target health information from Elastic Load Balancing
To get started:
- Create an ECS Gateway
- Associate it with a cluster
- Opt in your ECS service by adding the gateway connector parameter
You can do this with the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, API, AWS SDKs, or AWS CloudFormation.
Limits and pricing:
- Only ECS services that use the awsvpc network mode are supported; all launch types are supported
- Available in all commercial AWS Regions
- ECS Gateway itself has no additional charge; you pay for the underlying infrastructure, such as ALBs, provisioned when services connect
Wrap-up
- ECS Gateway is a new ECS ingress resource that manages ALBs from creation to removal
- Define standards once and let services opt in
- Up to 25 services can share an ALB to save cost
- No extra charge, but only awsvpc-mode services are supported
A great fit for platform teams running many services on ECS!
