Aurora Serverless now scales 16 ACUs in a second!

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Aurora Serverless just got faster at scaling.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that Amazon Aurora Serverless now scales in larger steps, adding up to 16 ACUs to its current capacity within a second and continuing to scale up to 256 ACUs as your workload grows.

What changes

Your workload reaches the capacity it needs faster. When the work finishes, Aurora Serverless automatically scales down to zero, so you only pay for what you use.

AWS says this is especially well suited to agentic AI applications, which have bursts of activity, long idle windows, and unpredictable traffic.

Dive Deep

  • Enablement: on by default for all Aurora Serverless clusters on platform version 3 or 4, with no configuration changes
  • Clusters on versions 1 and 2: upgrade directly to the latest platform version 4 to benefit
  • Checking your version: in the AWS Management Console under instance configuration, or via the RDS API's ServerlessV2PlatformVersion parameter

See the Aurora pricing page for pricing and Regions, and the Aurora Serverless scaling documentation for details.

Wrap-up

  • Add up to 16 ACUs within a second, scaling up to 256 ACUs
  • On by default for platform versions 3 and 4
  • Versions 1 and 2 can upgrade to 4
  • Scale to zero and pay only for what you use

This is for anyone running bursty agentic AI or databases with long idle periods!
