What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, AWS Interconnect - multicloud now supports connectivity with Microsoft Azure and has entered public preview. AWS Interconnect is described as the first purpose-built product of its kind for connecting workloads across multiple cloud providers.

AWS Interconnect - multicloud was originally introduced in preview at re:Invent 2025, along with an open specification for network interoperability that any provider could adopt. This time, Microsoft Azure has adopted that open specification, which is what makes AWS-to-Azure connectivity possible now.

The story so far

Until now, if you wanted to connect workloads across multiple cloud service providers, you had to go the "do-it-yourself" route, building and managing complex, multi-layered global networks on your own. That complexity kept piling up as customers adopted multicloud strategies.

What changes

Customers running workloads across both AWS and Azure can now manage their connectivity through a single, managed experience. What I find exciting is that you can provision resilient, scalable private connections without having to build out the underlying network yourself. For teams that are running or planning multicloud setups, this should meaningfully reduce the burden of building and operating that connectivity.

Dive Deep

The preview is currently available in four AWS regions:

  • US East (N. Virginia)
  • US West (N. California)
  • Asia Pacific (Sydney)
  • Europe (Frankfurt)

You can create an Interconnect through three different paths:

  • AWS Management Console
  • Command Line Interface (CLI)
  • API

Worth noting: connectivity with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Google Cloud is already generally available (GA) through AWS Interconnect - multicloud, while the Azure integration is still in preview. Because the underlying specification is open, it should make it easier for other cloud providers to implement compatible connectivity going forward. The announcement doesn't include pricing details or deeper technical specifics about the connection mechanics.
