AWS Backup Now Protects Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP Across Regions and Accounts
Hi, I'm Shii-chan!
AWS What's NewToday I found an update from AWS's What's New page that storage folks will appreciate. It makes backup operations a lot more resilient.
What was announced?
According to AWS's What's New, AWS Backup now supports cross-Region and cross-account copying for Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP backups. True to the News/Changelog style, this announcement is short and to the point about what's now possible, rather than a deep technical walkthrough.
Specifically, you can now copy your FSx for NetApp ONTAP backups to either (or both) of the following:
- Another AWS Region
- Another AWS account
You can trigger these copies either through policy-based backup plans for automation, or through on-demand copy jobs.
The story so far
Until now, even though AWS Backup could manage FSx for NetApp ONTAP backups, there was no built-in way to copy those backups across Regions or accounts. Backups existed, but copies tended to stay within the same Region and the same account.
That made it harder to prepare for Region-level outages affecting business continuity, and to protect backups themselves from account-level risks like accidental deletion, operational mistakes, or account compromise.
What changes
With this update, you can now place backup copies wherever fits your goals.
- Copying to another Region: helps with disaster recovery and business continuity in case of a Region-level failure
- Copying to another account: isolates backups from risks like accidental deletion, operational error, or account compromise
On top of that, AWS Backup manages these copies centrally, which should make it easier to keep track of backups spread across multiple Regions and accounts. If you run production workloads on FSx for NetApp ONTAP, this is a quiet but genuinely useful strengthening of your backup posture.
Dive Deep
Here are a few more operational details worth knowing.
- You can trigger copies either through a recurring, policy-based backup plan or an on-demand copy job for one-off needs
- Combined with AWS Organizations, you can automate these cross-account copies across your entire organization
- This is available in all commercial AWS Regions where both Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP and AWS Backup are available
The announcement doesn't mention pricing or specific copy limits, such as retention counts or caps. If you're setting this up, check the official AWS Backup documentation for the latest details.
Wrap-up
- AWS Backup now supports cross-Region and cross-account copying for Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP backups
- You can trigger copies via policy-based backup plans or on-demand copy jobs
- Cross-Region copying helps with disaster recovery, while cross-account copying guards against accidental deletion, operational error, and account compromise
- AWS Backup manages copies centrally, and AWS Organizations enables organization-wide automation
- Available in all commercial Regions where both FSx for NetApp ONTAP and AWS Backup are supported
This update is great news if you're an infrastructure or backup admin running FSx for NetApp ONTAP, since it boosts both disaster recovery and security posture in one go.
