AWS Backup smashes the 1,000-bucket wall, now scales to your full S3 quota!

Hi everyone, it's me! Today I want to share a nice AWS Backup update I found!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

In the AWS What's New, AWS Backup announced support for protecting more than 1,000 Amazon S3 buckets per account. The new limit now matches the Amazon S3 bucket quota configured for your account.

The story so far

Until now, AWS Backup for Amazon S3 supported up to 1,000 buckets per account. For accounts running a large number of buckets, that 1,000 cap could actually get in the way, potentially leaving some buckets outside of backup coverage.

What changes

With this launch, AWS Backup can now back up all general purpose buckets in your account. Instead of a fixed 1,000-bucket ceiling, the limit now scales up to match your account's S3 bucket quota.

The best part: existing backup plans and configurations keep working as-is. If you're using the default AWS Backup managed policies, there's nothing extra you need to do.

Existing backup plans and configurations continue to work with no changes required if you are using default AWS Backup managed policies.

Dive Deep

A few practical details worth noting from the announcement:

  • If you use custom policies, you'll want to check the AWS Backup documentation for the required permissions
  • This capability is available in all AWS commercial Regions and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions
  • To get started, just head over to the AWS Backup console

Wrap-up

  • AWS Backup for S3 now scales beyond the old 1,000-bucket cap, up to your account's S3 bucket quota
  • If you're on default managed policies, your existing backup plans keep working with zero changes
  • Custom policy users just need to double-check the required permissions in the docs
  • It's live across all commercial Regions and AWS GovCloud (US), so you can try it right away

If your team manages a huge number of S3 buckets and used to hit that 1,000-bucket wall, this quiet but meaningful update is definitely for you!
