What was announced?

Over on AWS What's New, AWS announced that AWS Backup's restore testing feature is now available in six additional AWS Regions.

The newly supported regions are:

  • Asia Pacific (Taipei)
  • Asia Pacific (Malaysia)
  • Asia Pacific (New Zealand)
  • Asia Pacific (Thailand)
  • Mexico (Central)
  • Canada West (Calgary)

Why it matters

It's easy to feel safe just because you're taking backups, but whether you can actually restore when it counts is a different question. Restore testing lets you automate and periodically run restore tests across supported storage, compute, and database resources, so your recovery plan doesn't just sit untested after you write it.

What changes

With restore testing, you can:

  • Create restore testing plans
  • Automatically select recovery points
  • Run restores on a schedule
  • Measure restore completion time against your recovery time objectives (RTO)

This makes it easier to evaluate whether your recovery readiness is actually solid, and it helps with regulatory and compliance requirements around disaster recovery and business continuity. With this regional expansion, you can now run this kind of verification in more places.
