AWS End User Messaging Adds Automatic Failover to Dodge SMS Delivery Trouble!

Hi there, it's Shii-chan! Today I have a quiet but genuinely useful update about SMS actually getting delivered.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, AWS End User Messaging's phone pools now support automatic failover. When SMS delivery is affected by a disruption further downstream, traffic automatically switches to the next best-performing number in the pool.

The story so far

Until now, sending SMS through a phone pool had no built-in way to automatically reroute around a delivery problem. Messages travel from AWS through messaging providers and then on to mobile carriers, so delays or failures could happen along the way. That's especially painful for time-sensitive messages like delivery notifications, one-time passcodes, and reminders.

What changes

AWS End User Messaging now continuously watches for delivery delays, message failures, and drops in conversion, and automatically reroutes traffic to a more optimized delivery path when things go wrong. If you're already sending through phone pools, you don't need to change anything — you get this benefit automatically. If you're not using phone pools yet, creating one puts you on the same path.

Wrap-up

  • Phone pools now automatically switch to the best-performing number when SMS delivery hits trouble
  • AWS End User Messaging monitors delivery delays, failures, and conversion drops and reroutes traffic on its own
  • Existing phone pool users get this automatically, with no configuration changes
  • Available in every AWS Region where AWS End User Messaging is available

This is great news if you're sending high volumes of SMS, like verification codes or reminders, that absolutely need to get through!
