AWS End User Messaging Can Now Take Your WhatsApp Chat Straight to a Voice Call!

Hey everyone, it's me, Shiichan! I found some exciting AWS news today about making WhatsApp business conversations even smoother!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, AWS End User Messaging now supports voice calling on WhatsApp. Businesses can place and receive voice calls with their customers directly inside WhatsApp, using the same verified business identity they already use for messaging.

The best part is that a conversation can move seamlessly from a chat thread to a voice call without switching to a separate channel or application. Context is never lost, and customers stay right in the message thread where the conversation started.

Voice calling works in both directions:

  • Customers can call a business from within a WhatsApp chat
  • Businesses can call customers who have granted permission to be contacted

Why it matters

Before this, moving from a WhatsApp chat to an actual phone call usually meant switching apps or numbers, which broke the conversation's context and added friction for customers.

Now that chat and voice calling live in the same WhatsApp thread, conversations can flow naturally from text to voice. For businesses, this also means keeping the whole interaction history and context in one place instead of scattering it across channels.

What changes

Here's who I think will be happy about this:

  • Customer support agents: they can escalate a complicated chat straight into a voice call without leaving the conversation
  • Sales reps: they can call customers who've opted in, and handle deals or follow-ups right inside WhatsApp
  • Customers: no need to switch apps or look up a separate phone number, they can just start a call from the same chat screen

It's a win for both sides, since everything happens in one place.

Dive Deep

Let's look at the technical details. You can enable and manage WhatsApp voice calling in two ways:

  • The AWS End User Messaging console
  • The AWS End User Messaging API

Either way, you enable and manage voice calling on a registered WhatsApp business phone number. You could click through the console for a quick setup, or wire it into automation through the API.

As for regional availability, WhatsApp voice calling is available in all Regions where AWS End User Messaging Social is available.

For detailed setup steps, AWS points to the AWS End User Messaging Social User Guide, which is worth checking before you roll this out.

Wrap-up

Here's a quick recap of today's news:

  • AWS End User Messaging now supports voice calling on WhatsApp
  • Conversations can move from chat to voice without switching apps
  • Calls work in both directions, businesses calling customers requires prior permission
  • You enable and manage it on a registered WhatsApp business phone number, via console or API
  • Available in all Regions where AWS End User Messaging Social is available

If you're running customer support or sales through WhatsApp, this one's worth a look!
