What was announced?

AWS's What's New page announced that AWS Marketplace now supports launching on Amazon Lightsail. Select AWS Marketplace AMIs (Amazon Machine Images) can now be deployed to Amazon Lightsail in just a few clicks.

The products covered by this launch are:

  • Microsoft Windows Server
  • Microsoft SQL Server Express
  • Ubuntu
  • cPanel & WHM
  • Plesk

This is aimed at customers who want simple, predictable pricing and a streamlined instance-creation experience.

The story so far

Until now, subscribing to an eligible AWS Marketplace product meant deploying to Amazon EC2 only. EC2's flexibility comes with more configuration to think through, which could feel like extra overhead if you just wanted to get something running simply.

What changes

When subscribing to a supported product, you can now choose Amazon Lightsail alongside Amazon EC2. Selecting Lightsail takes you to the Lightsail console with the AMI and Region already pre-configured, ready to deploy at a predictable monthly price.

Lightsail bundles compute, storage, and a generous data transfer allowance into a fixed monthly price, and also offers managed databases, containers, and load balancers. It's a great fit if you're starting a small project or workload and want to keep things simple.

What to do next

Getting started is straightforward:

  • Visit AWS Marketplace
  • Subscribe to a supported product (Windows Server, SQL Server Express, Ubuntu, cPanel & WHM, Plesk, and more)
  • Choose "Launch on Lightsail"

The "Launch on Lightsail" deployment option is available for eligible products in all AWS Regions where Lightsail is available.
