EKS Auto Mode Now Lets You Tune kubelet, sysctls, and Hugepages!
Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Today's news is about node tuning finally coming to EKS Auto Mode!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, Amazon EKS Auto Mode now lets you tune kubelet settings, Linux kernel sysctls, and hugepages directly in the NodeClass resource.
Node provisioning, scaling, patching, and upgrades are still handled by Auto Mode.
The story so far
EKS Auto Mode takes care of operations for you, but workloads that needed specific node tuning were hard to run on it.
Those needs often meant maintaining EC2 launch templates, custom AMIs, or privileged DaemonSets yourself.
What changes
With the new advancedCompute field, you can do things like:
- Configure user namespaces for rootless container builds in CI/CD pipelines
- Tune eviction thresholds and container log rotation to protect nodes from disk and memory pressure
- Raise network and ARP cache limits for large clusters
- Pre-allocate 2Mi or 1Gi hugepages for HPC, database, and latency-sensitive workloads
Not having to maintain launch templates, custom AMIs, or privileged DaemonSets is a big win!
Dive Deep
- You apply settings declaratively using the Kubernetes API
- EKS Auto Mode validates them and applies them at node boot
- Settings are preserved through scaling and upgrade events
- It is available in all AWS Regions where EKS Auto Mode is available
To get started, see "Create a Node Class for Amazon EKS" in the EKS documentation.
Wrap-up
advancedComputein NodeClass tunes kubelet, sysctls, and hugepages- Auto Mode handles validation, boot-time application, and keeping settings through scaling and upgrades
- No launch templates, custom AMIs, or privileged DaemonSets needed
This is for anyone who skipped Auto Mode because of node tuning needs!
